Reviews: Best New Upcoming Phones
If you’re always looking for the newest, most innovative in smartphones, 2022 is going to be the year you’ve been waiting for! This fall and winter, several new smartphone releases and improved models—from top brands like Samsung, Apple and Google—will be showcasing new features, faster technology, and stronger and more powerful processors.
Let’s have a look at the devices we’ve been most anticipating this coming year ahead:
1. Google Pixel 6
The Google pixel 6, which will be released on October 27, 2021 is promising to be one of the premier Android phones of the holiday season. It will be offered in a standard model and a Pro model, each with the new Tensor chip onboard, and Android 12 OS. The standard model will come with 8 GB of RAM on board, with a Pro model sporting 12 GB of RAM. Each model comes in a 128GB and 256GB model, with a Pro also offering a 512 GB version. The Pixel 6 will start at $749, with the Pro version around $1100 USD. The camera is also getting an upgrade with a 4X optical zoom for telephoto lens that will allow for a wide-angle sensor and 150% more light. The new Tensor chip, which will give the Snapdragon chip a run for its money, and the battery on the Pro model that can last around 9 1/2 hours on a battery test.
2. Samsung Galaxy S22
Samsung‘s newest Galaxy S22 series likely won’t be available until next year, as Samsung has historically released its new phone line in February or March each year. Samsung will focus most of the new upgrades on the S22 series around the camera. It’s rumored that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 895 chip will be the processor for the S22 series. Prices will start at around $800 USD for the standard model, and around $1200 for the Ultra line.
3. iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro
The Apple iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro have already made their debut in September of this year, which has been the usual month for Apple to introduce its new roundup of devices. The opening price is $800 USD for the 13 and $999 for the Pro version. The two phones can be had in a variety of colors, including a new sunset gold color, and the camera now has dual lenses that offer an ultrawide shot with 47% more light capture. The Pro camera adds a third lens to capture even more detail than the standard model. The Pro model also offers up to 1TB of storage, one of the highest of any smartphone, and the Super Retina XDR display can refresh from 10 to 120 times per second. There is also a new five core GPU on the 815 Bionic chip making the phone a fairly decent media device.
4. Surface Duo 2
Microsoft’s quirky new smartphone was released on September 22, with a starting price of $1500 USD, an increase over the launch price of the first Surface Duo, which had lackluster sales. Those who were able to get their hands on a pre-release model of the Duo 2 found it rather hit and miss, with decent hardware, but problematic software and not many apps that can take advantage of the two screens. However, the Surface Duo 2 shows a triple rear camera set up, 5G connectivity, improved data speeds, and a more vibrant foldable screen. It also runs the Snapdragon 888 processor. It has 8 GB of RAM on board with up to 512GB of storage.
5. iPhone X Fold
Not content to leave the new folding screen devices up to the Android line, Apple is also offering its own model of foldable phone, the iPhone X Fold, which will start at $1500 USD before trade-in. It will likely be the latest of the new phones of 2022 to emerge, most likely in September of next year, as there are still apparently design flaws that are being worked out. Little is known about it presently other than Apple is continuing to work and improve on it prior to it’s release date. Quite likely Apple is simply biding its time waiting to see how the Android models do with users, and where the flaws and problems exist with the technology, and waiting to release their own version of a foldable device once these problems have already been identified on competitor phones. Because little is known about it, nothing is certain about the specifications. It will likely be an improvement upon the iPhone 13, which will likely allow for at least 512 GB of onboard storage, dual or triple rear facing cameras for wide angle shots, and perhaps an even more powerful processor.
